When was the Holy Rosary Parish Church Built?
Holy Parish Church, initially known as “Santo Rosario Church,” is nestled in the heart of Angeles City in Pampanga. It is 141-year-old and is also known among locals as “Pisambang Maragul” or big city. The National Museum has declared it as one of the most important cultural properties in the country and has been recognized as a National Historic Site by the National Commission for Cultural and the Arts. The church was constructed during the Spanish colonial era from 1877 to 1896 and its foundation was first made on October 18, 1877 by the founding families of Angeles City led by Don Mariano Henson.
It is perfect to visit the parish in December due to Christmas festivities as you will get to see the church adorned in colorful decorations and have the chance to celebrate Christmas and advent with the parish. The church also holds daily mass throughout the year and is open to the public any time of the day.
What was the Architecture of the Holy Rosary Church?
Fr. Terrien built the church for the Chinese Catholic community in Kuala Lumpar when he was given charge of them. He bought a piece of land, about two acres in size, on Brickfields Road near the railway station. He has Fr. Lambert MEP as the architect.
The architecture was semi-gothic with flying buttress arches but the roof was flat. The parsonage was an attap building behind the church. The belfry was on the ground at the left of the church where the bell was placed. She was blessed by the then new bishop Monsignor Emile Barillon MEP. Her title was ‘Church of Our Lady of the Rosary.’
Who Established the Holy Rosary?
There are various views on the history of the rosary, a Catholic prayer rope, chain or cord used to count specific prayers, commonly as a Marian devotion. The exact origin of the rosary as a prayer is not much clear and subject to debate among scholars. The use of knotted prayer ropes in Christianity dates back to the Desert Fathers in the 3rd and beginning 4th centuries. These counting devices were used for prayers such as the Jesus Prayer in Christian monasticism. The period after the Council of Ephesus in 431 experienced gradual growth in the use of Marian prayers during the Middle Ages.
The papal bull Consueverunt Romani Pontifices in 1569 established the devotion to the rosary in the Catholic Church. The Christian victory at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 was likened to the praying of the rosary by masses of Europeans based on the request of Pope Pius V and eventually resulted in a feast day for Our Lady of the Rosary (originally Our Lady of Victory).
