St John the Evangelist Catholic Church Wedding | Grace & John-Luc

Indianapolis wedding photographers like us feel a little starstruck every time we step inside St John the Evangelist Catholic Church. This historic church stands in the heart of downtown, right across from the Indiana Convention Center and just a short walk from Lucas Oil Stadium. It is the home of the very first Catholic parish in Indianapolis, which began back in 1837. For many families, a wedding here connects them to a long and meaningful history.

The church itself is a true work of art. It was designed by well known Indianapolis architect Diedrich Bohlen in the Gothic Revival style and was completed in 1871. Its two tall towers are topped with copper spires, which were added later and recently restored. A beautiful round rose window sits above the main entrance. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it remains one of the most recognized landmarks in the city.

Inside, the long nave leads the eye straight toward the altar. Arched windows, rich details and soaring ceilings create a calm, sacred feel that makes vows feel even more special. For a time, the church even served as the cathedral for the city. Today, it continues to welcome a growing parish family. Couples who want a classic, traditional ceremony in a stunning historic setting often find exactly what they are looking for right here.

A Love Story That Began With Service

Grace and John-Luc met at Notre Dame while on a service learning trip. What a beautiful way to start a love story! Spending time helping others gave them a chance to see each other’s hearts right from the beginning. Since then, they have kept that spirit of adventure alive. They love trying new experiences together, from exploring new restaurants to traveling to new places.

These two clearly enjoy every moment side by side. Whether they are planning their next trip or finding a new favorite place to eat, they bring curiosity and joy to everything they do.

For their wedding day, Grace and John-Luc chose rich, bright purples and pinks with very classic styling. The church set an elegant tone for the ceremony, while the reception felt warm and homey. Their biggest wish was for everyone to have a lot of easy fun, and they even added a few New Orleans traditions to the reception.
