Few places say Lowcountry quite like Magnolia Plantation and Gardens. As Charleston wedding photographers, we feel lucky every time we get to work under those huge live oaks. Spanish moss hangs from the branches like lace. The Ashley River drifts by in the distance. It is the kind of setting that makes everyone slow down and take a deep breath. Couples come here when they want nature to be the star of the show. Honestly, it never disappoints.
This property has a long, rich history. It was founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, and its gardens are known as the oldest public gardens in America. Today Magnolia Plantation and Gardens covers close to five hundred acres along the river. It sits about fifteen minutes from downtown Charleston, so it is easy for guests to reach. Many people visit just to walk the gardens, and you can see why. Something is blooming in almost every season.
Couples have several spaces to choose from. There is the Carriage House near the river, the indoor tropical Conservatory, the wraparound veranda of the Plantation House and a covered Pavilion by a grand lawn. Ceremonies often take place right under the ancient oaks. For photos, we love the oak lined paths, the open lawns and the famous Long White Bridge. Every turn gives us a new frame. Guests always seem to wander off to explore between events.
Haily and Mackie’s Intimate Lowcountry Wedding
Haily and Mackie met about six years ago, back when Haily was working as a waitress. They love adventure and spend their free time rafting, hiking and paddle boarding. Life with them sounds like one big outdoor trip. They were super excited to finally tie the knot. We love a couple who chases fun together, and it shows in how easy they are with each other.
They planned an outdoor wedding with just a few guests, so the day felt very intimate. Their colors were creme and olive green. Those soft, earthy tones look so natural next to mossy oaks and green lawns. A small wedding like this lets a couple slow down and truly soak in every moment together. It was all about the two of them and the people they love most.
