President Lincoln’s Cottage Wedding | Hannah & Jonathan

Few places in the city hold as much history as President Lincoln’s Cottage, and our Washington DC wedding photographers feel lucky every time we visit. The cottage sits on a peaceful hilltop on Rock Creek Church Road in the Petworth neighborhood. It stands on the grounds of the historic Soldiers’ Home, now the Armed Forces Retirement Home. Even though it is right in the city, the wide lawns and old trees make it feel calm and private.

The story of this home is truly special. Built in 1842 in the Gothic Revival style, it became a summer retreat for Abraham Lincoln and his family from 1862 to 1864. Lincoln spent about a quarter of his presidency here, and he worked on the Emancipation Proclamation while living in the cottage. Today President Lincoln’s Cottage is a museum and historic site run as an independent nonprofit, and event rentals help support its mission.

Couples love the handsome woodwork, marble fireplaces, and inviting veranda. Outside, expansive lawns are framed by mature trees, including a grand magnolia. Many couples say their vows on the south lawn with the cottage as the backdrop, then invite guests inside for cocktails on both floors. Museum staff are on hand to share stories with curious guests, and the site hosts only one wedding per day. Free parking on site is a nice bonus in the city.

Hannah & Jonathan’s Vintage Garden Celebration

Hannah and Jonathan met through Hinge, and their first date was at Tatte in Dupont Circle. They talked for three hours about the most random parts of their lives, and the rest is history. They love coffee and crossword dates, good food, running races, concerts, and travel. Jonathan got Hannah hooked on pickleball, and he is a music teacher, just like her mom. At home, they love cuddling with their black cat.

For their wedding, they wanted a vintage, garden style feel that felt like an intimate gathering of their favorite people. Green and white kept the look classic and fresh. They told us they are both a little shy and do not love being the center of attention. That is completely okay with us! As a wedding photographer team, we are great at helping quiet couples relax with easy prompts and plenty of breathing room. Our studio serves the entire Washington DC area, including nearby Maryland and Virginia. You can see more calm, natural celebrations on our blog.
